Young Indian paddler Manav Thakkar today became world no.1 in the latest International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rankings in the Under-21 men’s singles category. With this, Thakkar became the fourth Indian to achieve the feat after Harmeet Desai, G Sathiyan and Soumyajit Ghosh.

Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan today announced his retirement from all forms of Cricket. Irfan, who has been out of favour from the Indian team for few years now, made his Team India debut at the age of 19 in 2003.He became the second Indian after Harbhajan Singh to take a Test hat-trick, removing Salman Butt, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yusuf during the Karachi game.

ITTF executive committee meeting held in New Delhi.

New Delhi hosted the two-day Executive Committee meeting of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) beginning January 10th. This was the second time the country hosted such a meeting. The previous EC meeting of the ITTF was held in New Delhi way back in 1987 when Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) played host to the World Championships in Delhi.

Among spinners, the earlier fastest to 100 wickets was Harbhajan Singh in 76 matches.

The Fit India Mission under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Goa, organized the inaugural event of ‘Fit India Cyclothon’ event in Panaji. The Cyclothon was flagged off by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant from the Campal Parade Ground in the city.

In Tennis, Sania Mirza and her Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok have won the women’s doubles title of the WTA International trophy at Hobart in Australia. In the final today, they beat Shaui Peng and Shuai Zhang of China 6-4,6-4. It is Sania’s 42nd WTA doubles title and first since Brisbane International trophy in 2007 with American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Ace India grappler Bajrang Punia defeated Jordan Oliver 4-3 in the final in the 65kg freestyle category at the Ranking Series to win his first gold medal in 2020. Bajrang’s achievement follows the gold that Vinesh Phogat won on Friday in the women’s 53kg category. Ravi Kumar Dahiya, who competed in the 61 kg category instead of his regular 57kg, also bagged gold after defeating Kazakhstan’s Nurbolat Abdualiyev 12-2 in his final bout.

The two-day SQAY competition is being organized from today at Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The under-21 category tournament is organized under ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ campaign. SQAY is a martial art form of Central Asia, in which the players show the skills of fencing. The martial art form originated in Kashmir.
