Indian Coast Guard Day

Indian Coast Guard celebrated 44th Raising Day on 01 Feb 20. In 2019, ICG saved about 1000 lives at sea, escorted 6000 fishing boats with 40000 fishermen, apprehended Contraband worth Rs. 2000 Cr and detained 30 foreign boats with about 120 miscreants.

1st indigenous bio-jet fuel aircraft of IAF landed successfully in Leh.

The AN-32 aircraft of Indian Air Force powered with 10% blend of bio-jet fuel took off and landed successfully in Leh airport.

Lt Gen Y K Joshi takes over as GOC-in-C Northern Command.

Lieutenant General YK Joshi took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command at Udhampur.

Defence Budget 2020

The Union Budget for the financial year 2020-21, presented by Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament on February 01, 2020, envisaged a total outlay of Rs 30,42,230 crore. Out of this, Rs 3,37,553 crore has been allocated for Defence (excluding Defence Pension). For Defence Pension, an amount of Rs 1,33,825 crore has been provided in Budget Estimates 2020-21. There is an increase of Rs 40,367.21 crore in the total Defence allocations (Rs 4,71,378 crore) including Defence Pension over the financial year 2019-20. Total defence budget accounts for 15.49 per cent of the total central government expenditure for the year 2020-21.

The allocation of Rs 4,71,378 crore represents a growth of 9.37 per cent over Budget Estimates (Rs 4,31,010.79 crore) for the financial year 2019-20.

Out of Rs 3,37,553 crore allocated for the financial year 2020-21, Rs 2,18,998 crore is for the Revenue (Net) expenditure and Rs 1,18,555 crore is for capital expenditure for the Defence Services and the Organisations/Departments under Ministry of Defence. The amount of Rs 1,18,555 crore allocated for capital expenditure includes modernisation related expenditure.

Coastal Security Exercise ‘Matla Abhiyaan’ conducted by Indian Navy.

The Indian Navy conducts a coastal security exercise named ‘Malta Abhiyan’ in Kolkata, West Bengal. The exercise, named after Malta River, aims to interact with coastal communities to spread awareness on coastal security and understand the navigational complexities in the Sunderban deltaic waters.

Ninth edition of India-Bangladesh joint military exercise SAMPRITI-IX begins in Meghalaya.

The ninth edition of Indo-Bangladesh Joint Military Exercise SAMPRITI-IX commenced at Umroi, Meghalaya. The main focus of this edition of the fourteen days joint exercise is on Counter-Terrorism Operations in mountainous and jungle terrain.

2nd BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise concluded.

Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Nityanand Rai today inaugurated the Field Training Exercise of 2nd BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise on flood rescue at the Ramachandi Beach, Puri (Odisha).  Delegates & rescue teams of five member nations namely- India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka & Myanmar, of BIMSTEC group participated in this  exercise with great zeal and enthusiasm. This Joint Field Training Exercise was conducted under the leadership of  , Director General, NDRF Shri Satya Narayan Pradhan by NDRF officials.

PM Modi inaugurated 11th edition of DefExpo-2020 in Lucknow.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, today inaugurated the 11th edition of DefExpo in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. India’s biennial military exhibition seeks to showcase the potential of the country as a   global defence manufacturing hub. DefExpo 2020 has become one of India’s largest defence exhibition platform as well as one of the Top DefExpo in the world. This time more than a thousand defence manufacturers and 150 companies from all over the world are part of this Expo

Union Defence Minister and Local MP Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Shripad Yesho Naik, UP Governor Anandi Ben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and many ministers of state government attended the inaugural ceremony.

Indian, Russian companies sign 14 MoUs at DefExPO 2020.

14 MoUs were signed today between India and Russia on the second day of DEFEXPO 2020.Major Companies which are part of these MoUs includes BHEL, Bharat Dynamics Limited and and Vista control from Indian side and INVERSIA, UVZ and BEML from Russian side. These MoUs were related to production of different defence equipment such as parts of t-72, T-90, radar systems, ASW Rocket launchers and 3D modeling.

DRDO signs Technology Development Contract with Rosoboronexport Russia.

During DefExpo 2020, HEMRL, Pune signed technology development contract with Rosoboronexport, Russia for development of Advanced Pyrotechnic Ignition Systems. High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) is the DRDO laboratory working in the development of spectrum of high energy materials required for missiles, rockets and guns.

Over 200 partnerships involving Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs), Transfer of Technology (ToTs) , Product launches were concluded on the third day of DefExpo 2020, at ceremony tilted “Bandhan”, making it the most successful such events to be held in India. The pacts, aimed at forging and renewing partnerships for innovative collaboration, and transformation of the Defence manufacturing in the country were inked by representatives of various DPSUs, Indian private Defence cos and foreign companies in the presence of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow.

Among those MoUs signed today, 23 of them were by Uttar Pradesh Government. Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath said these MoUs envisage Rs 50,000 crores investment in the defence corridor setup in the state and generate 3 lakh job opportunities.

Indian Army develops world’s first bulletproof helmet.

World’s first bulletproof helmet has been developed by the Indian Army. The bulletproof helmet can stop an AK-47 bullet round fired from a distance of 10 meters. The Ballistic helmet is developed by An Indian Army Major Anoop Mishra.

India and UK joint military drill ‘Ajeya Warrior’.

India and the United Kingdom conducted their 5th edition of joint military exercise ‘Ajeya Warrior-2020’ at Salisbury Plains, the United Kingdom from February 13-26. The exercise is being held from 2005.

Bhabha Kavach developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is the lightest level III plus bullet proof jacket (6.8 kgs nominal weight) available in India.

India and Portugal signed 14 agreements to boost cooperation in a range of areas including defence, investment, transport, ports, culture and industrial and intellectual property rights and yoga. The agreements were signed after extensive talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in New Delhi.

47 Squadron of Indian Air Force Celebrates Diamond Jubilee.

No. 47 Squadron of Indian Air Force currently stationed at AF Station, Adampur, completed 60 years of its glorious service to the nation. To commemorate the occasion, Diamond Jubilee celebrations were organised at Air Force Station Adampur on 14-15 February 2020.

The Squadron was formed on 18 December 1959 at Air Force Station Halwara. It has operated Toofani, MiG-21 FL and MiG-29 fighter aircraft. The crest of the unit is a figure of a kneeling ‘BLACK ARCHER’ with a drawn bow, depicting poised readiness. The motto of the unit, “Karmani Vyapurutham Dhanuhu” is translated as “My bow is always stretched for its task”.

Defence Minister lays foundation stone of Thal Sena Bhawan in Delhi Cantt.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone of Thal Sena Bhawan in Delhi Cantt. The new Army headquarters will come up near the Manekshaw Centre and is spread over 39 acres. The multi-storeyed building will be able to accommodate around six thousand personnel and will have all the offices of Army in the complex.Around 7.5 lakh square meter of the area will be constructed to house the office complex and parking. It is likely to be constructed in five years.

FATF decides continuation of Pakistan in ‘Grey List’.

The global terror financing watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) today decided continuation of Pakistan in the ‘Grey List’ and warned the country that stern action will be taken, if it fails to check flow of money to terror groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). The decision was taken at the Financial Action Task Force’s plenary in Paris.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) was established in July 1989 in Paris. The objectives of the FATF are to set standards and promote effective implementation of legal, regulatory and operational measures for combating money laundering, terrorist financing and other related threats to the integrity of the international financial system.

Language Martyrs’ Day ‘Amar Ekushey’(21 February) Observed in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh on 21 February observed the Shaheed Dibash known as ‘Amar Ekushey’ across the country to pay tribute to the martyrs of language movement.

The day is observed as Shaheed Dibash to commemorate the martyrs who were killed in firing by the Pakistani police on 21 February 1952 in Dhaka.

The first anniversary of the iconic National War Memorial is being observed on 25 February 2020. The National War Memorial is a monument built by the Government of India near India Gate, New Delhi, to honour the Indian Armed Forces. The memorial is spread over 40 acres. The monument was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25th February 2019.

Exercise-Indradhanush-V 2020

The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Royal Air Force (RAF) jointly commenced the fifth edition of Exercise Indradhanush at Air Force Station Hindan on 24 Feb 2020. The focus of this edition of the exercise was ‘Base Defence and Force Protection’. This theme was of significance considering the recent threats to military establishments from terror elements.The exercise concluded on 29 Feb 2020.

Defence Minister inaugurates new Light Combat Helicopter Production Hangar at HAL Complex in Bengaluru.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the new Light Combat Helicopter Production Hangar at Helicopter Division in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Complex at Bengaluru, Karnataka.

LCH is a 5.5-tonne class combat helicopter designed and developed by HAL. It is powered by two Shakti engines and inherits many technical features of the Advanced Light Helicopter. LCH has the distinction of being the first attach helicopter to land in Forward Bases at Siachen, 4,700 mts above sea level with 500kg load.

A Goodwill Flight from India has delivered 15 tonnes of Emergency Medical Assistance comprising masks, gloves and other emergency medical equipments to novel coronavirus hit China.

Indian coast guard off shore patrol vessel ICGS “Varad” commissioned.

The Indian Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Vessel ICGS “Varad” has been commissioned today. It was inducted into service by Union Shipping Minister Mansukh Mandaviya at a function held in the Chennai Port, in presence of Director General of the Coast Guard, K. Natarajan. The 98 meter long vessel has been designed and built by the L&T at its yard at Kattupalli near Chennai.

The ship is fitted with modern navigation and communication equipment, sensors and machinery. It is equipped with 30 mm and 12.7 mm guns. It has special onboard features like the Integrated Bridge System, Platform Management System, Automated Power Management System and High Power External Fire-Fighting system.

ICGS Varad is propelled by two 9100 kilowatt diesel engines and attains a speed up to 26 knots. It can operate without refueling for 5000 nautical miles at a stretch. The ship will be deployed extensively for the surveillance of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone and to safeguard the maritime interests of the country.

With ICGS Varad joining the fleet, the Indian Coast Guard will have 147 ships and boats and 62 aircraft.

6th Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel “VAJRA” launched.

VAJRA, the sixth coast guard Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV-6) was launched in Chennai on February 27, 2020 to enhance coastal security.  The Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Vessel is expected to strengthen the efforts Indian Coast Guard in securing the vast coastline of over 7500 km, including an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of over 20 lakh sq kms.
